西昌学院扎根于全国最大彝族聚居区——四川省凉山彝族自治州，前身可追溯至1939年内迁创建的国立西康技艺专科学校。2003年经教育部批准合并组建为省属全日制普通本科院校，是全国新建本科院校中唯一的省、部、委共建高校。2024年成功获批硕士学位授予单位，新增农业、资源与环境、公共管理三个专业硕士学位授权点，为服务国家乡村振兴战略和地方治理现代化提供更高层次人才支撑。现有安宁、邛海两个校区，占地1900亩，校舍建筑面积50余万平方米，固定资产总值近14亿元，教学科研仪器设备总值近4亿元，纸质图书268万余册，数字资源量1319万余册，全日制在校生两万余人。
Xichang University is rooted in the largest Yi ethnic community in China—Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. Its origins can be traced back to the National Xikang Technical College, which was relocated and established in 1939. The present-day Xichang University traces its origin to 2003, when, authorized by the Ministry of Education, it was formed through the merger of four local colleges in Liangshan Prefecture and became a provincial full-time regular undergraduate institution. It is the only one among China’s newly founded undergraduate universities to be jointly established by provincial, ministerial, and commission-level(the State Ethnic Affairs Commission) bodies. In 2024, the university was authorized to grant master’s degrees, adding three professional master’s degree programs in Agriculture, Resources and Environment, and Public Administration. This development enables it to provide higher-level talent support for the national rural revitalization strategy and local governance modernization. The university currently has two campuses—Anning and Qionghai—covering an area of 1900 mu (approximately 127 hectares), with a total floor area exceeding 500,000 square meters. Its fixed assets amount to nearly 1.4 billion yuan, and the total value of teaching and research equipment is close to 400 million yuan. The library houses over 2.68 million printed books and 13.19 million digital resources, serving more than 20,000 full-time students.
西昌学院实施开放办学，入选“中非大学联盟”交流机制成员高校，与法国巴黎夏庞蒂埃学院、匈牙利佩奇大学等 12 所高校签订合作备忘录，推动教育科技领域的交流合作。
True to its open approach in fostering international partnerships, Xichang University has been selected as a member of the “China-Africa University Alliance” exchange mechanism. It has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 12 universities worldwide, including the École Charpentier in Paris, France, and the University of Pécs in Hungary, to promote exchanges and collaboration in education, science, and technology.
西昌学院自2017年开始成班定制招收学历留学生，开设工商管理等 5 个本科专业，近三年招收留学生达70余人，主要来自孟加拉国、巴基斯坦、利比里亚、阿富汗、塔吉克斯坦、喀麦隆、加蓬等“一带一路”沿线生源国家。
Since 2017, Xichang University has been admitting international students into tailored degree programs, offering five undergraduate majors including Business Administration. In the past three years alone, it has enrolled over 70 international students, predominantly from Belt and Road Initiative countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, Liberia, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Cameroon, and Gabon.
