西南民族大学坐落于有“天府之国”美誉的国家历史文化名城——成都，是国家民委直属综合性普通高校， 国家民委、教育部、四川省、成都市共建高校。2013年入选“全国毕业生就业典型经验 50 强高校”；2017年入选“全国创新创业典型经验 50 强高校”；2017年、2020 年连续两届荣膺“全国文明校园”称号。
学校占地面积近 3000 亩，有“三校区一基地”（成都市有武侯校区、航空港校区、太平园校区三个校区， 在阿坝藏族羌族自治州红原县建有“西南民族大学青藏高原生态保护与畜牧业高科技研究示范基地”），校舍建筑面积118.57万平方米；有56个民族的全日制博士、硕士、本科、预科等各类学生3万余人，教职员工近3000人，其中博、硕士生导师974人。
学校现有 24 个学院，有 4 个一级学科博士学位授权点、2 个博士后流动站、1 个博士后创新实践基地、25 个一级学科硕士学位授权点、28 个硕士专业学位授权点，有涵盖哲学、经济学、法学、教育学、文学、历史学、管理学、工学、农学、医学、理学、艺术学 12 个学科门类的本科招生专业 67 个，与 50 余所国（境）外高校和科研机构建立校际合作与交流关系，累计招收 70 多个国家的 7600 余人次留学生。
Southwest Minzu University (SMU) is located in Chengdu, a national historical and cultural city known as the “The Land of Abundance”. SMU is a comprehensive university directly affiliated with the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People’s Republic of China, jointly built by the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Province and Chengdu City, formerly known as Southwest Institute for Nationalities, founded in July 1950, officially established on June 1, 1951, and renamed Southwest Minzu University in April 2003. In 2013, it was selected as one of the “Top 50 Colleges and Universities with Typical Experiences of Graduates’ Employment”; and in 2017, it was selected as one of the “Top 50 Colleges and Universities with Typical Experiences of Innovation and Entrepreneurship”; in 2017 and 2020, it was awarded the title of “National Civilized Campus” for two consecutive years.
SMU covers an area of approximately 200 hectares, consists of “Three Campuses and One Base” (in Chengdu, namely Wuhou Campus, Hangkonggang Campus and Taipingyuan Campus, and the “Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Ecological Protection and High-tech Research Demonstration Base for Animal Husbandry” in Hongyuan County of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture). SMU carries forward the motto of “Unity, Harmony, Collaboratve learning, and Self-confidence, Self-reliance” and promotes the flourishing and interaction of diverse cultures. SMU has over 30,000 full-time doctoral, master, undergraduate, preparatory and other types of students from 56 ethnic groups and up to 3,000 faculty members.
