Introduction

Brief Overview

Calculus is a fundamental mathematical discipline that studies functions, limits, derivatives, integrals, and their applications, serving as a core analytical tool for modern science and engineering.

Detailed Introduction

This course is an important compulsory foundational theory course offered by UESTC for international undergraduate students, comprising Calculus I (80 hours) and Calculus II (64 hours). The curriculum comprehensively covers core knowledge modules such as functions, limits and continuity, single and multivariable calculus, infinite series, and ordinary differential equations, aiming to establish a solid mathematical foundation for students' subsequent professional studies. Addressing the significant variation in the mathematical backgrounds of international students, the course emphasizes the visualization and intuition of concepts, deeply integrating information technology with mathematics teaching. It utilizes dynamic graphics, numerical simulations, and mathematical software to "visualize" abstract mathematical concepts, effectively reducing learning difficulty and stimulating student interest. The course adopts the classic English textbook Thomas' Calculus and integrates high-quality open course resources from institutions like MIT to build a rich repository for independent learning. The teaching team actively explores the integration of traditional Chinese culture and philosophical ideas (such as Zhuangzi's thought, The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, etc.) into the teaching process to enhance cultural identity and understanding. Through online discussion groups, case studies, and diversified assessment methods, the course focuses on cultivating students' logical reasoning skills, abstract thinking abilities, and the capacity to use mathematical tools to solve practical engineering problems, assisting them in successfully transitioning from their various national basic education systems to Chinese higher education.
