University of Electronic Science and Technology of China - Psychological experiment

Introduction

Brief Overview

Psychological Experiment is an interdisciplinary field that studies the quantitative relationship between physical stimuli and the psychological sensations they evoke. It serves as a foundational methodology for cognitive neuroscience and experimental psychology.

Detailed Introduction

This course has been offered for international graduate students in majors such as Biomedical Engineering at UESTC since 2015. It is a specialized elective that emphasizes the integration of theory and practice. The course adopts a full-English, small-class teaching model (student-teacher ratio approximately 1:3), aiming to systematically build a knowledge framework and experimental skills in psychophysics for international students with engineering backgrounds and no prior psychology foundation. The course content is divided into two main parts: theoretical lectures and experimental operations. The theoretical part covers basic concepts of psychophysics (thresholds, reaction times), classical experimental paradigms, and the neural mechanisms of core cognitive functions such as visual perception, attention, memory, and emotion. The experimental part relies on dedicated teaching laboratories, guiding students to use professional software like E-prime and behavioral experimental equipment to independently complete the entire process from experimental design, programming, and data collection to analysis and presentation. In response to teaching challenges during the pandemic, the course flexibly integrated online experiment platforms and remote guidance to ensure the quality of practical sessions. Through diverse teaching methods such as immediate "theory-experiment" cycles, open-ended project design, and flipped classrooms, the course focuses on cultivating students' scientific thinking, rigorous experimental design capabilities, and interdisciplinary research literacy, laying a solid methodological foundation for their subsequent in-depth research in fields such as brain science, neural engineering, and human-computer interaction.
